NotchNook not working? The best NotchNook alternatives in 2026

What happened to NotchNook in 2026, whether you can still buy it, and seven alternatives with prices and requirements: Boring Notch, Alcove, DynamicLake Pro, Atoll, MediaMate, NotchDrop and NotchDesk.

Short answer

NotchNook went offline in September 2026 during a dispute at its maker, lo.cafe, and is on sale again at getnotchnook.com, but older licenses don’t carry over automatically. To switch, Boring Notch is the best free pick, Alcove ($14.99 once) the most polished and DynamicLake Pro ($13.99 once) the most complete. For meetings and clipboard history, there’s NotchDesk (our app).

Is NotchNook still available?

Yes, again, with caveats. What we confirmed on 16 October 2026:

  • The old site is down. lo.cafe, NotchNook’s original home, doesn’t load, as our roundup of MacBook notch apps also found on 13 October.
  • Homebrew disabled it on 19 September 2026 because the download was unreachable. Its last listed version was 1.6.2, from June 2026.
  • Setapp dropped it, MacMagazine reported, and its Setapp page now redirects to the app list.
  • The cause was a dispute, not a shutdown. On 16 September, the Brazilian site MacMagazine reported a disagreement between lo.cafe’s partners over the company’s accounts, domains and licensing system. Users couldn’t activate licenses or get refunds, and a lo.cafe post on X advised people not to buy or renew until it was resolved.
  • It’s on sale again at a new site. getnotchnook.com names lo.cafe Ltda. as the publisher and offers version 1.6.9 for macOS 14.6 or later, with a 48-hour trial. It’s $15 lifetime or $2 a month until 17 October, then $25 or $3 a month, for 2 Macs.

Bought it before September? The new site’s license help page says old keys don’t activate automatically: lifetime buyers can ask for a manual review or buy again, and old subscriptions don’t carry over. We couldn’t confirm how the dispute ended. If your copy still works, there’s no need to switch today. If not, here are the alternatives.

The alternatives, one by one

Boring Notch: the free pick

Boring Notch is free and open source (GPL-3.0), with about 11,000 stars on GitHub. Hover the notch for music controls with a visualizer, your calendar and a file shelf you can AirDrop from. It can also replace the volume and brightness pop-ups.

Pros: free, close to NotchNook’s core, actively developed (a 2.8 release candidate shipped on 10 October). Cons: the developers don’t have an Apple Developer account yet, so macOS warns you on first launch and you allow the app by hand. The last stable release is from November 2025.

Best for: NotchNook users who mainly used music controls and the file tray and don’t want to pay.

Alcove: the most polished

Alcove is the closest thing to the iPhone’s Dynamic Island: live activities, notifications, custom pop-ups, lock screen widgets and swipe gestures. It’s $14.99 once for up to 3 devices, updates included, with a 72-hour trial.

Pros: one payment, a 14-day refund window. Cons: needs macOS 15, and a file tray isn’t on its feature list. Its FAQ says it relies on private Apple APIs and is sold “as is”.

Best for: people on macOS 15 or later who want the Dynamic Island look.

DynamicLake Pro: the most features

DynamicLake Pro has the longest feature list here: notifications from Messages, WhatsApp, Slack and email, iPhone and FaceTime calls, music, a file drop that converts audio, video and documents, AirDrop, a calendar and weather glance, an app switcher and plugins. It’s $13.99 once on Gumroad for up to 3 devices, with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Pros: a lot for one payment, including NotchNook’s file features. Cons: more app than you need if you only want music and a file tray.

Best for: getting the most features for a single payment.

Atoll: free, with more than music

Atoll is free and open source (GPL-3.0) and started from Boring Notch’s code. It adds live activities for Focus, screen recording and battery, plus system stats, timers, clipboard history, a color picker and lock screen widgets. Version 2.3.3 shipped in July 2026.

Pros: free, and does more than Boring Notch. Cons: its README says it needs a MacBook with a notch.

Best for: a free notch app with system stats, timers and a clipboard.

MediaMate: just music and pop-ups

MediaMate replaces macOS’s volume and brightness pop-ups and adds a Now Playing view that sits inside the notch or in a separate bubble. It’s €6.99 once on Gumroad for 5 devices, with a demo mode to try first.

Pros: inexpensive and runs on older macOS. Cons: no file tray, calendar or widgets.

Best for: people who only want nicer pop-ups and music controls.

NotchDrop: just the file tray

NotchDrop does one NotchNook job: drag files onto the notch to hold them, or AirDrop them from there. It’s open source (MIT) and free on the Mac App Store.

Pros: free, simple, installs from the App Store. Cons: files only, and the App Store version was last updated in November 2024.

Best for: people who only used NotchNook’s file tray.

NotchDesk: meetings and your clipboard

We make NotchDesk, so read this part with that in mind. It isn’t a like-for-like NotchNook replacement: it’s built around meetings and the clipboard, not music.

  • Meetings: your next event beside the notch with a live countdown, an alert a minute before each one, and a Join button for Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex, FaceTime and Slack huddles. ⌃⌘ J joins from any app (more in how to join meetings in one click).
  • Clipboard: a private history of text, links, code, images, files and screenshots, with Quick Paste (⌃⌘ V) in any app and search inside screenshots.
  • The rest: a file shelf with AirDrop, notes, timers, a calculator and other tools. Now Playing is best effort: on macOS 15.4 and later it shows only Music and Spotify.

Macs without a notch get the same panel as a small island at the top of the screen. No account, no analytics. Pricing is in the table above; everything it does is on the features page.

Pros: meetings and clipboard in one app; works without a notch. Cons: costs more than the one-time apps once the founders’ licenses are gone. If music and a file tray are what you miss from NotchNook, Boring Notch or DynamicLake Pro is the better pick.

Best for: people whose day is calls and copy-paste.

Which one should you pick?

  • Free: Boring Notch, or Atoll on a notched MacBook.
  • Pay once: Alcove for polish, DynamicLake Pro for features.
  • One job only: NotchDrop for files, MediaMate for music and pop-ups.
  • Meetings and clipboard: NotchDesk.
  • Still want NotchNook: read getnotchnook.com’s license help page before you pay.

Questions people ask

Is NotchNook still available?

Yes. After going offline in September 2026, it’s sold again at getnotchnook.com, for macOS 14.6 or later. The old lo.cafe site doesn’t load, and Homebrew and Setapp no longer offer it.

Why is NotchNook not working?

A dispute at its maker, lo.cafe, took down the old site and licensing system in September 2026. The new site says older keys don’t activate automatically: lifetime buyers can request a manual review or buy again, and old subscriptions don’t carry over.

What is the best free NotchNook alternative?

Boring Notch: free, open source, for macOS 14 or later, with music controls, a calendar and a file shelf with AirDrop. Atoll is also free and does more, but needs a notched MacBook.

Is there a NotchNook alternative you pay for once?

Yes: Alcove ($14.99, macOS 15+), DynamicLake Pro ($13.99, macOS 14+) and MediaMate (€6.99, macOS 13+).

Which notch apps work on Macs without a notch?

NotchNook does, as a slim handle at the top of the screen, and NotchDesk shows a small island. Atoll needs a notched MacBook. For the others, check the maker’s site.

Is there a NotchNook alternative on the Mac App Store?

NotchDrop is free there, but only handles files: hold them in the notch or send them with AirDrop. The larger alternatives are sold on their own sites, Gumroad or GitHub.
